Why is CPR important?
CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and it is an emergency technique that can be used to revive a person’s heart when it has stopped beating (American Heart Association, 2018).
CPR makes it possible to continue blood circulation throughout the body after the heart has stopped beating. This makes it possible to successfully resuscitate the patient once more advanced emergency medical staff arrive.
According to the American Heart Association, about 475,000 people in the US die of cardiac arrest each year. But when patients who experience cardiac arrest outside of the hospital receive immediate CPR from a trained bystander, 45% of those patients go on to survive.
Immediate CPR can double or even triple the chances of survival after a cardiac arrest.
